Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day was observed with Urban ASHAs on 21 October 2024 at the Conference Hall, Chief Medical Officer’s Office, Mokokchung.

During a brief program, Dr Limanaro, DPO (UIP & RCH), presented the significance of the day, stating that Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) is a public health problem worldwide. She highlighted that one out of every five people in India lives in IDD-endemic areas. These disorders are caused by a lack of iodine in the diet, which can range from simple goiter to mental retardation and stunted growth, known as cretinism. Dr Limanaro added that most of these disorders are permanent; however, all of them are preventable by consuming good quality iodized salt.

She called upon the ASHAs to disseminate information on iodine disorders, their consequences, and control and preventive measures. Salt testing was also demonstrated to the ASHAs. The program was chaired by L Kilangmeren, Computer IEC.
