The Ongpangkong Students’ Conference (OKM) began preliminary work on Monday to repair the road from the IOC intersection to the Rotary junction in Mokokchung town. OKM volunteers were seen unloading and stockpiling truckloads of boulders and stone chips at strategic points along the approximately 2 km route for the repair work.
Recognizing the deteriorated state of the road, which is crucial for the local community and serves as a key traffic route in Mokokchung town, OKM held a series of meetings on August 30 and 31 with the district administration and the Urban Development Department. Subsequently, OKM and the authorities agreed to collaborate on the road repair efforts.
It is understood that the repair work will involve filling up potholes along the entire stretch of the arterial road. The Urban Development Department will provide the machinery, while OKM will mobilize resources including labor, boulders, and stone chips.
OKM sources informed that preliminary work will continue until Tuesday, with actual repair work slated to commence thereafter. It was also informed that traffic may be diverted during the repair period, which will be notified in advance.
Notably, despite being one of the most important roads in Mokokchung town, this particular road has not undergone any major maintenance in years. While authorities, various organizations, and volunteers have undertaken temporary repairs from time to time, the high volume of traffic and other technical factors have contributed to its current deteriorating condition.
OKM’s initiative represents the latest community effort to maintain the road, while there are no confirmed government plans for its maintenance.
