Mokokchung Police have arrested Anupam Kumar Singh, a resident of Siwan, Bihar currently living in Shillong, for orchestrating a sophisticated cyber fraud targeting citizens and banks in Nagaland. The scam, involving fake court orders and police reports, has reportedly caused financial losses exceeding Rs 3 crore. The accused has been booked under Sections 319 & 338 BNS and Section 66D of the IT Act.

The fraud came to light when a staff member of the Mokokchung District Court received an email containing a fake court order claiming to be issued by a “Judicial Magistrate First Class, Mokokchung” – a position that does not exist. The document included fabricated seals, stamps, and signatures.

Investigation revealed that the accused also misused genuine government email IDs to trick banks into freezing accounts of innocent victims and diverting funds into accounts he controlled.

Upon receiving the complaint, Mokokchung Police launched an investigation, verified the documents with court authorities, and formed a Special Investigation Team led by SDPO (HQ) Aekant Jain, IPS and OC PS-I Vikeheto Kennao.

With the assistance of SP East Khasi Hills and SP Shillong (City) the accused was located and arrested on 20 February 2026.

Preliminary findings suggest multiple victims and significant financial damage. Police investigations are ongoing to trace the money trail and identify additional accused. Citizens and financial institutions are advised to verify any court orders or police communications before acting, and report suspicious messages immediately.

The Superintendent of Police, Mokokchung, congratulated the Special Investigation Team for their professionalism and hard work, emphasizing the department’s commitment to combating cyber crime and protecting the public.
