The Department of Social Welfare observed the International Day of Older Persons at Kumlong Community Hall, Mokokchung, on Thursday.
Speaking on the theme, “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives,” Pastor Anok Amer of Impur Baptist Church said older persons are a blessing to society and stressed the need for proper care to ensure their wellbeing and longevity.
He encouraged senior citizens to remain socially, mentally and physically active so that they could continue contributing meaningfully to society. While stressing the importance of long-term measures to support longer and healthier lives, Amer also emphasised the need for social protection for older persons.
The programme concluded with a free health screening for senior citizens, jointly organised by the Department of Social Welfare and the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Mokokchung district.
