In an interesting revelation, a surprise check for illicit liquor led to detection of benami businesses in Salangtem New Market on Friday last. The Salangtem Ward Yimden, on receiving complaints from various quarters, undertook the surprise checking during which they caught “three allotted rooms who were using alcohol.” The Salangtem Market, more commonly referred to as the New Market, is under the purview of the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC).

Notably, the Salangtem Ward Yimden or Authority on Saturday took the matter to the ADC and Administrator of MMC, informing him of the development and for his “necessary action.”

In a letter to the ADC & Administrator of MMC, the Salangtem Ward Yimden informed that three individuals who were allegedly involved in “using alcohol” in their allotted rooms in the market were summoned on Saturday during which “they all confessed of using the same and claimed to be the sole owner.”

As such, the Salangtem Ward Yimden “punished them and written agreement along with their witness were done” as per the ward’s rules, it was informed.

The three accused were identified as Shop No. 14 owner Mr Pomed, a resident of Artang ward; Shop No. 10 owner Mr Hangko, a resident of Artang ward; and Shop No. 8 owners Ms Tutu and Mr Vikato, both residents of Mongsenbai ward.

“However, to our surprise, all the trade licenses of the allotted rooms bear different names with different nature of business,” Salangtem Ward Yimden informed the ADC & Administrator of MMC.

The Salangtem Ward Yimden also furnished the details of the original owners of the shops to whom they were allotted, along with the nature of business.

According to the Salangtem Ward Yimden, the name of the permit holder of Shop No. 14 is Mr Talijungba of Alembang ward and the nature of business as per his permit is to run a hotel.

Likewise, the name of the permit holder of Shop No. 10 is Mr Lolenmeren of Penli ward with the permit to run a tea stall.

Further, Shop No. 8 as per the permit was allotted to Mr Nungshiwapang of Alempang ward to run a fish stall.
