Mokokchung, September 21 (MTNews): In a resounding call to action, the Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem (MTLT) has urged the Nagaland Transport Department and its nodal agencies to address the rising number of road accidents in the state. This appeal comes in the wake of the tragic motor accident that claimed eight lives on 20 September at K-Station village in Tseminyu district. While the MTLT expressed heartfelt condolences to the aggrieved families, it emphasized the need for immediate measures to mitigate road accidents.

The MTLT expressed shock and sorrow over the 20 September accident and prayed for the bereaved families and eternal peace to the departed souls.

“Words are insufficient to express our sorrow and our feeling of loss is accentuated by the fact that all the victims were in the prime of their youth; some of them had recently cleared the competitive exams and were about to join their service,” MTLT regretted. “It is a great loss for the Naga society indeed,” it added.

While acknowledging the unpredictability of life and death, the MTLT extended its prayers for solace to the bereaved families and eternal peace for the departed souls during this difficult time.

“As life and death belongs to God alone, the MTLT also feels helpless to do anything but to pray that our Almighty God grant solace to the bereaved family at this hour of great loss and eternal peace to the departed young souls,” MTLT conveyed.

Expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support from various quarters during and after the tragic accident, the MTLT commended the swift response of the Nagaland Police in Tseminyu and Wokha, as well as the tireless efforts of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel and civil society organizations.

“It must have been a very difficult task to recover the victims crushed by the sand laden truck; however, after many grueling hours of your collective efforts, the bodies could ultimately be retrieved, which brought a sense of closure to us all,” MTLT said.

The youth organization also expressed appreciation for Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio’s announcement of an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the victims’ families and Home Minister Y Patton for ordering a thorough investigation into the accident.

However, the MTLT underscored the need for a proactive approach to address the alarming increase in road accidents in the state, which has resulted in the loss of numerous lives and immense suffering for many families. In light of this, the MTLT suggested to the Nagaland Transport Department to initiate thorough brainstorming sessions involving all stakeholders to develop effective solutions for mitigating road accidents.

In a show of solidarity, the MTLT offered its support, both intellectually and logistically, to assist government agencies to ensure safer streets and highways for all citizens.
