The Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) has appealed to the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung to ensure the inclusion of a nominee from the business community in the Mokokchung Municipal Council, Changtongya Town Council, Tuli Town Council, and Mangkolemba Town Council.

The MCCI said that since almost all revenue for the Municipal and Town Councils is collected from or through the business community, it is reasonable for the business community to have a representative to ensure smooth local self-governance. The presence of a nominee from the business community would assist the councils in understanding market dynamics and economics, facilitating smoother administration, it said.

Furthermore, the MCCI emphasized the importance of having a business community representative during the first-ever implementation of the Nagaland Municipal Act2023. It stated that this inclusion is crucial for the best interest of the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), as many precedents will be set during this period.

“Now that the members of the Municipal and Town Councils have been elected and sworn in, and the process for composing the Municipal and Town Councils in Mokokchung is underway, we take this opportunity to submit a humble proposition in the hope that you will consider it,” the MCCI added.

MCCI also congratulated the Government of Nagaland and the State Election Commission on the successful conduct of the first-ever civic elections under the Nagaland Municipal Act 2023 and also appreciated the Deputy Commissioner Mokokchung for ensuring peaceful and successful conduct of the ULB elections in the district.
