‘Block2TakeOut,’ Mokokchung’s first Korean-inspired café, known for its Bibimbap and fried chicken, will remain open until December 2024, its owner Jungshi Walling has confirmed. Walling had initially planned to close the café earlier this year, but personal reasons led him to extend its operations.
Before the café’s closure, Walling, a 23-year-old self-taught chef, plans to pass on his cooking techniques and its hospitality by offering internship opportunities with a stipend. “I am open to people who wish to intern. I would love to teach them how to cook and serve, and provide them with a small stipend,” said Walling.
Walling explained that there is much to learn about professional service, including how to earn tips by serving effectively. He also mentioned that, despite the café running smoothly, financial challenges and his interest in exploring a career in other areas including the hospitality sector have led him to make the decision to close the café.
Walling’s passion for cooking began at the age of 13, but it was the need to support his family that motivated him to open a physical café in March 2022. He explained that when ‘Block 2 Take Out’ first launched, the Korean wave was gaining popularity in Mokokchung, yet there were no local places offering such cuisine. Encouraged by his sister, Walling saw an opportunity to fill that gap.
“My sister was a big source of inspiration. I learned a lot from watching YouTube tutorials and also picked up techniques from a friend in Delhi,” he shared.
The café, celebrated for both its food and ambiance, has earned a loyal customer base. “The food is great, and it’s a nice place to chill at night,” said Rebika, a customer. Another customer expressed disappointment, saying, “I feel bad because my favorite Bibimbap will no longer be available. This café serves food that you can’t find anywhere else in town.”
Despite the café’s popularity, Walling explained that the decision to close was primarily driven by financial considerations and his desire to explore new career opportunities. “We all know the Mokokchung market. While the café has been running smoothly, the finances have been a bit tight. At the same time, I feel like there are other things I want to do. I’m considering a career change, like hospitality,” he revealed.
Although ‘Block2TakeOut’ will close its doors in December, Walling hopes that by offering internships, the café’s recipes, its hospitality and style will continue to be preserved.
