The 3rd edition of the Mokokchung Inter-ward Volleyball Tournament organized by Kumlong Sporting Association (KSA) kicked off on Wednesday, August 7 with eight wards competing for the championship. The tournament, organized by KSA under the aegis of the Mokokchung District Volleyball Association (MDVA), has been one of the most successful events, producing players like Reshitemjen and Satemmeren, who represented Nagaland in the Northeast Olympic Games 2024.
Nathan Ozukum, Co-convenor of the Organizing Committee, expressed his optimism that the tournament would open up better prospects for the youngsters in the future. Ozukum also hoped that all 18 wards in Mokokchung would participate in the tournament one day.
I Pokyim Jamir, President of the MDVA, thanked the Kumlong Ward Council for their support in uplifting the youth and providing the platform. He emphasized that Mokokchung district is one of the best in Nagaland in the volleyball discipline, having won the Inter-District championship consecutively for the past 11 years. He credited this success to the abundant training and opportunities provided to the players.
The Inter-ward volleyball tournament is organized to identify and encourage hidden talents from the grassroots level. The tournament will award a cash prize of Rs 30k to the winners and Rs 20k to the runners-up.
Defending champions Kumlong wins first match against Mongsenbai
Defending champions Kumlong Ward commenced their title defense with Captain Satemmeren and star player Rishitemjen performing brilliantly as key attackers, securing victory in straight sets. In a fiercely contested first set, Mongsenbai capitalized on several of Kumlong’s errors, resulting in a competitive 25-21 scoreline. However, Kumlong bounced back emphatically in the second set, showcasing exceptional form to dominate and win decisively at 25-10.
Marepkong debuts against Sungkomen
Marepkong, participating in the tournament for the first time, struggled against the dominant Sungkomen team, losing the first set 25-3. Sungkomen maintained their superiority in the second set, securing another easy set with a score of 25-9.
Artang Ward secures victory against Lijaba Lijen
Last year’s runner-up, Artang Ward, secured an easy victory over Lijaba Lijen, winning consecutive sets with scores of 25-12 and 25-7.
Penli wins against Alempang in tight match
In a tightly contested match between Penli and Alempang, the latter took the first set with a score of 25-18. However, Penli made a comeback in the second set, winning 25-17. In the third and deciding set, Penli Ward won 25-13.
Kumlong defeats Lija Lijen in straight sets
In the fifth match of the day, Kumlong triumphed over Lija Lijen, winning the match in straight sets with identical scores of 25-16, 25-16.
