Mon, 17 July (MTNews): Incessant rainfall in the region has led to significant damage to a stretch of National Highway (NH) 702 between Mon village junction and Yaling area in Mon district. Mon Deputy Commissioner Ajit Kumar Verma stated that due to the heavy rain on 15 July, a portion of the road measuring approximately 1 km sank, causing disruptions in vehicular movement.

Highlighting the unprecedented nature of the situation, the Deputy Commissioner acknowledged that this was the first time such damage has occurred on the stretch in response to inquiries regarding whether rain-related damage occurs annually.

Meanwhile, in an official notification released on Monday, the Deputy Commissioner cited incessant rainfall and adverse weather conditions as the cause of landslides, mudslides, and rock falls, resulting in roadblocks and damage to roads and properties throughout the district.

Considering the recent sinking and damage to the NH-702 stretch between Mon village junction and Yaling area, the notification announced the closure of the road for all vehicular movement until further notice.

The notification also instructed light motor vehicles to take an alternate route through the Mon Village bypass road. Furthermore, due to the fragile nature of the alternate route, the movement of heavy vehicles, both commercial and passenger, was restricted to the designated bypass road until further orders.
