A joint declaration program officially marking Monyakshu Village as a ‘No Plastic Zone’ and launching the Green Community Club was held on October 7, 2024, at the Village Council Hall in Monyakshu. The event was a collaborative effort organized by the District Administration, Forest Department Mon, and various stakeholders, including the Monyakshu Village Council, Monyakshu Village Students’ Union, KNSK Monyakshu Unit, Monyakshu Village Baptist Church, and Monyakshu Citizens’ Union.
The initiative aims to eliminate single-use plastics, reduce plastic waste, promote sustainability, and encourage eco-friendly alternatives. “Through this declaration, Monyakshu Village commits to environmental stewardship, striving to protect water sources, soil, and wildlife from plastic pollution while nurturing a cleaner, greener, and healthier community for future generations,” an update from DIPR stated.
The event was graced by SDO (Civil) In-charge of Monyakshu HQ, Wiridin, NCS, as the Special Invitee, who officially declared Monyakshu Village a ‘No Plastic Zone’ and launched the Green Community Club. In his address, Wiridin urged the villagers to uphold the spirit of this initiative and assured the administration’s support in achieving the vision of a plastic-free, sustainable community.
Forest Range Officer of Tobu, Tongkem Konyak, commended the initiative, emphasizing the importance of addressing plastic pollution and encouraging the community to conserve wildlife and biodiversity. He expressed concern over the impact of single-use plastics on the environment and stressed the need for collective action.
Deputy Director of IPR, S Hongpi Konyak, provided an introduction to the Green Community Club, while Dr S Nyamnyei Konyak, Medical Officer at District Hospital Mon, made a PowerPoint presentation on the harmful effects of plastic use. The program was chaired by E Moba Konyak, President of the Monyakshu Village Students’ Union (MVSU), with the invocation pronounced by G Aban Wangsa, Youth Associate Pastor of Monyakshu Village Baptist Church. The welcome address was delivered by W Kanlong, Chairman of the Village Council.
Following the program, saplings provided by the Forest Department and the Green Community Club were planted, and plastic waste segregation activities were conducted as part of the ongoing effort to promote sustainability in the village.
