Eastern Naga Women’s Association warns construction along Nampong-Pangsau stretch threatens indigenous communities and culture
A Myanmar-based women’s organisation representing indigenous Naga communities has called on the Government of India to immediately stop all border fencing activities along the Nampong-Pangsau stretch of the India-Myanmar border.
In a statement, the Eastern Naga Women’s Association (ENWA), based in the Naga Self-Administered Region of Myanmar, alleged that road construction from Pangsau town to Htahaw No. 1 village has been completed and that the fencing process has now begun.
“The act of erecting border fences severely restricts and violates the history, culture, social fabric and family structures of the indigenous Naga people, who have lived on this land for generations,” the organisation said.
ENWA described the construction as a violation of Indigenous rights, fundamental human rights, democratic principles, and the historical identity of the Naga people. The group has demanded an immediate halt to all activities and urged Indian authorities to reconsider the ongoing project.
As a form of protest, ENWA has asked Naga women to refrain from attending the upcoming Nampong Festival on January 20, highlighting the project’s social and cultural impact.
