Nagaland Commissions’ Complex inaugurated despite non-completion due to “urgent need”

Kohima, 6 June (MTNews): Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed his concerns about the education and maturity levels of the Naga society while inaugurating the Nagaland Commissions’ Complex in Kohima today.
“The Naga society is educated but not mature and refined,” he said, noting that there are many apprehensions and doubts among the public and urged the Commissions to diligently carry out their assigned duties.
According to I Meyionen Jamir, the Chief Information Commissioner of Nagaland, the complex was inaugurated even though it is not yet completed due to the urgent need for office space by the Nagaland Information Commission.

During the inauguration, Chief Minister Rio emphasized the importance of all the Commissions in the state, stating that they are equally significant. He stressed that the role of the Commissions is to serve the people by listening to their grievances and addressing their queries and desires. He acknowledged the existence of multiple concerns among citizens and urged the authorities to provide prompt replies based on factual information. The objective of the Commissions, according to the Chief Minister, is “to gain the confidence of the people and promote transparency and accountability, and contain corruption.”

Chief Minister Rio expressed satisfaction with the quality of the construction and assured that the state government would provide the necessary resources for the completion of the building. He hoped that the entire complex would be finished within a year. He also urged everyone present to maintain a clean and hygienic environment.

Meyionen Jamir highlighted the functions of the Nagaland Information Commission, which includes one Chief Information Commissioner, two State Information Commissioners, and one Secretary. He informed that since its establishment in March 2006 until 2022-23, the Nagaland Information Commission has received 304 appeals and 11 complaints. During the 2022-23 period, it received 47 cases and disposed off 43 cases. Jamir added that the Commission has cleared all pending cases and is currently dealing with ongoing cases only.

The technical report presented by Chief Engineer, NPWD (Housing), Er I Tiameren, revealed that the construction work started in December 2013. The project site covers an area of 1.61 acres with a total planned area of 4,996.09 square meters. The overall physical progress of the complex is reported to be 65%.

The Nagaland Commissions’ Complex, situated below the NBCC Convention Centre in Kohima, will house various important commissions, including the Disability Commission, Child Rights Protection Commission, Electricity Regulatory Commission, Nagaland Information Commission, Women Commission, Human Rights Commission, Backward Tribes Commission, and Election Commission.
