Shillong, August 14 (MTNews): Along with the other Naga communities, the Naga Students’ Union, Shillong (NSUS) commemorated the 76th anniversary of Naga Independence on August 14, 2022 at the Don Bosco Technical Institute in Shillong with the theme “Unite et Regnabit” (Unite and Reign) with H.K. Zhimomi, President of the Naga Hoho as the chief guest.

Zhimomi in his speech narrated and highlighted important historical events of the Naga struggle in order to educate and remind the Naga youths in Shillong so that they do not stay confused by the divisive policies employed to divide the Naga nation.

He claimed that the Nagas had adopted Christianity as their shared religion and were required to exhibit Christian values. He also claimed that the Nagas had been called to freedom but had been forcibly seized by Indian armies.

As a leader and social activist for the Naga people, he shared his experiences, saying that “the freedom is not a demand by the Nagas to the Indian Government, but asking back what is rightfully theirs and to recognize and respect their rights”.

“The talk is uncertain, but there are possibilities and a high chance of the Naga solution in the near future,” he added.

Imeka Zhehoto Awomi, the president of the NSUS, emphasised the value of uniting “all Nagas under one roof” and the significance of the illustrious Naga heritage in his welcoming speech.

In order to prevent the younger generation from forgetting the priceless sacrifices made for the noble cause, he emphasized the need to “instill and preserve the spirit of glorious legacy in them.” He also urged young, aspiring leaders to recommit to their cause and work toward and realise the common destiny of the Naga people.
Speaking on the Naga vision, which is to live in a united Naga nation that has been “denied by the oppressors,” Nonwarngam Chisi, President of Moyon Students’ Union, Shillong, called for remembering the great Naga leaders who have fought and died for the vision.

He urged the young people to be ready for the fulfilment of the Naga vision, which is their inheritance, is imminent, and can only be achieved through Naga unity.
The “pre-ordained Naga destiny,” which the founding fathers outlined as a provision to the vision of one people, one nation, was once again stressed by Ab. Dizinbou, President of Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Shillong.

“The unique history, culture and world views of the Nagas is what fuels the journey to freedom, although it may be currently separated by political boundaries and united by blood and boundaries which is beyond boundaries. A free and prosperous land is what we wish for the Nagas, which is the pre-ordained destiny of the Nagas,” he added.

Along with the NSUS, the Naga Post Graduate Students Council Committee and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) participated in the celebration of Naga Independence. The Tangkhul Students’ Union, Shillong, performed a cultural piece to welcome the chief guest and the dignitaries.

Bah Donald, the general secretary of the Khasi Students’ Union, expresses his appreciation and congratulated the Nagas and the NSUS on the 76th anniversary of Naga Independence.

“The flame of the Naga revolution must never die and must be passed on to future generations,” he said, lamenting the atrocities committed on the Nagas by the Indian armed forces. He also welcomed the Naga students to Shillong and assured assistance to the Naga students when in need.

Imeka Zhehoto Awomi, the president of the Naga Students’ Union in Shillong, and the chief guest raised the Naga flag while the Chakhesang Students Union in Shillong led the singing of the Naga national anthem.

Rokheda Mahraomai, Chaplain, Poumai Christian Fellowship, Shillong, led the invocation.

The President of NSUS led a one-minute moment of silence in remembrance of the Naga martyrs who gave their life in defence of their country.

Teranshel Tontang of the Uipo(Khoibu) Students’ Union in Shillong served as the event’s host. Lipoknungchet Walling, vice president of the NSUS, gave the vote of thanks. Mughahoto Zhimomi, pastor of the Sumi Christian Fellowship in Shillong pronounced the benediction.
