Nagaland Budget 2026–27 receives broad appreciation in Assembly

The State Budget 2026–27 received broad appreciation from members of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly during the general discussion on the last day of the Phase-II of the Eighth Session held at NLA Hall, Kohima on Friday.

Initiating the discussion, Advisor for Industries & Commerce, Hekani Jakhalu described the Budget as “visionary and futuristic,” stating that despite financial challenges, the government remains committed to building a “Viksit Nagaland.”

She said the Budget aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals and provides a roadmap for inclusive growth, improved governance, and sustainable development.

Highlighting its women-centric approach, Jakhalu lauded initiatives such as support for women entrepreneurs, crèche facilities in government establishments, and promotion of women-led startups. She also stressed the importance of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in driving employment and economic growth.

Advisor for School Education and SCERT, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, also appreciated the Budget, noting that it reflects improvement compared to previous years and presents a forward-looking approach despite financial constraints.

Advisor for Water Resources, Tongpang Ozukum, described the Budget as robust and acknowledged developments linked to the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA), following the Memorandum of Understanding signed on February 5, 2026. He also urged the government to address recruitment and examination-related issues affecting communities residing in Mokokchung district.

MLA Achumbemo Kikon stated that the Government has been sincere in its approach towards the Naga political issue and described recent engagements with the Union Home Minister as fruitful. He expressed hope for a lasting and honourable solution.

Dr. Neisatuo Mero said the Budget is balanced despite fiscal challenges and reflects commitment towards welfare and development, particularly in agriculture, youth, health, and infrastructure sectors.

Advisor for Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, A. Pangjung Jamir, termed the Budget practical and aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, highlighting its focus on women empowerment, skill development, and livelihood generation.

Advisor for Food & Civil Supplies and Legal Metrology, K. T. Sukhalu, also commended the Budget while raising concerns over fiscal sustainability and stressing the need for enhanced revenue generation and strict adherence to recruitment norms.

Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio, in his concluding remarks, thanked members for their participation and reiterated the Government’s commitment to fiscal discipline, transparency, and inclusive development. He said the Government has taken up the issue of revenue deficit grants with the Central Government and remains hopeful of a favourable response.

The House later passed the Nagaland Appropriation Bills for 2026–27 along with other legislative measures, before Speaker Sharingain Longkumer adjourned the session sine die.
