Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio inaugurated the 23rd Dr. T. Ao Inter-District Championships Trophy at the Loyem Memorial Astro Turf Ground in Tuensang on September 17. In his address, Rio acknowledged the efforts of the organizing committee and Tuensang District Football Association for hosting the prestigious tournament, which honors Dr. T. Ao, a football legend and captain of India’s team at the 1948 London Olympics.
Rio encouraged the youth to uphold Dr. T. Ao’s legacy and assured them of the government’s commitment to improving sports infrastructure across all districts. Highlighting Nagaland’s potential in sports, he said the state’s success stories in 2024, particularly in the Paralympics, where Hokato Hotozhe Sema won a bronze medal. The Chief Minister also announced plans to enhance facilities at Loyem Memorial Ground, including building galleries, a security wall, and electrification.
“The Championship is being played in the Eastern Nagaland region for the first time. The Govt. is committed to improving sports infrastructure in all the districts. Focus will be given to women football as well,” Rio tweeted later.
“Nagaland Football League will start this year with clubs competing. Sporting events serve as catalysts for fostering camaraderie & team spirit, & instills values such as discipline, hard work & sportsmanship,” he added.
The event featured speeches from various dignitaries, including MLA Lima Onen and Nagaland Football Association President K Neibou Sekhose. In the opening match, Tuensang defeated Kiphire with a score of 10-0.
