In a fiery response, the Nagaland Congress has slammed Lok Sabha MP Tokheho Yephthomi for his recent remarks on Article 371(A), accusing him of “borrowing the opinion of a third party” and failing to uphold his responsibility as an elected representative.
The controversy stems from Yephthomi’s statement advocating the removal of Article 371(A), a special provision safeguarding the unique rights and customs of the Naga people. This triggered strong opposition from the Nagaland Congress, who condemned Yephthomi’s stance and demanded action from his party, the National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP).

However, Yephthomi defended himself by pointing out the NSCN-IM’s previous statements in October 2023, questioning why the Congress remained silent then. This prompted the Congress to issue a scathing rebuttal, raising several key points:
Questioning Yephthomi’s reliance on a third party: The Congress questioned why Yephthomi, as a duly elected MP, felt the need to “borrow the opinion” of the NSCN-IM on such a crucial matter. They emphasized that as a representative of the people, Yephthomi should have held his own independent position and taken accountability for his statements.
Addressing Yephthomi’s “whataboutery”: The Congress dismissed Yephthomi’s attempt to deflect criticism by invoking the NSCN-IM’s past statements. They argued that “whataboutery” does not excuse his own actions and that holding an elected representative accountable is a separate issue.
Reiterating their stance on Article 371(A): The Congress reiterated their unwavering opposition to any move aimed at diluting the rights of the Naga people enshrined in Article 371(A). They expressed disappointment with the NDPP’s lack of censure towards Yephthomi’s remarks and pledged to continue fighting for the protection of the Naga identity.
Earlier, on 23 January, the MP had tweeted, “The NSCN-IM on 26th May 2023 had stated that Article 371(A) no longer had any political significance. Prior to this they had also stated on 10th October 2023 stated that Article 371(A) was a road block to the Naga Political solution and that it only meant loss of Naga’s nationality and political identity. The @INCNagaland was silent on both statements made by the NSCN- IM on Article 371(A), but ironically, they have questioned my recent statement and clarification. Does the NPCC subscribe to the NSCN-IM’s views about Article 371(A)?”
