Lok Sabha MP-elect from Nagaland, S Supongmeren Jamir has assured to ceaselessly endeavour to do justice to the mandate given to him and the Congress Party and that he accepts the verdict of the people of Nagaland with utmost gratitude and humility.
In a message issued on Wednesday, Jamir thanked “the Lord Almighty for His abundant Kindness, and for reminding us once again that all things are possible in Him.”
He extended his gratitude to his supporters and well-wishers, including the rank and file of the Congress family in Nagaland and beyond, the Campaign Committee and the volunteers and individuals for their unwavering support and sacrifices throughout the campaign journey. “This momentous victory is as much theirs as it is mine,” he said.
He also acknowledged the Rising People’s Party for their “exemplary camaraderie and rock solid partnership.”
Jamir also thanked the civil society and church organizations, the media fraternity and all poll-related government officials for their contributions in “facilitating the delivery of another democratic mandate.”
He also appreciated his fellow competing candidates for their spirited campaigns and looked forward to their constructive and collaborative interventions as he set out to discharge his responsibilities in the service of the people.
Jamir reaffirmed his commitment to represent the interests and aspirations of the people of Nagaland and the nation to the best of his abilities, both within and outside Parliament.
The Congress created history on 4 June 2024 by winning the lone Lok Sabha seat in Nagaland after a gap of 20 years. The party does not have any MLAs in the state assembly.
S Supongmeren Jamir defeated his nearest rival, Dr. Chumben Murry of the NDPP, a BJP ally, by a margin of 50,984 votes. This was the first major win for the Congress party, which has not had any MLAs in the state assembly since 2014. The party last won the Lok Sabha seat in 1999.
In the 2019 election, the ruling NDPP candidate, Tohekho Yeptomi, had won the seat by over 13,000 votes against Congress candidate KL Chishi.
