In view of the new COVID-19 variants detected in the country, one case of variant NB.1.8.1 and four cases of variant LF.7 have been reported so far. These variants are currently under observation by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, and are classified as Variants Under Monitoring (VUMs). While they are not considered dangerous at this stage, they have been linked to rising case numbers in China and parts of Asia. In India, however, the most prevalent COVID-19 variant remains JN.1.

The current symptoms of COVID-19 in India (2025) are observed to be mild and subtle, with no significant increase in hospitalizations. According to recent reports published by the World Health Organization (WHO), the NB.1.8.1 variant poses a low global health risk.

Common symptoms include:
1. Low-grade fever or chills
2. Mild sore throat
3. Nasal congestion or runny nose
4. Occasional dry cough
5. Headache and fatigue
6. Gastrointestinal upset (diarrhea in some cases)
7. Mild body aches
8. Loss of smell or taste (less common now)
9. Severe shortness of breath (only if underlying health issues exist)

In this regard, the following Do’s and Don’ts are advised for public awareness and preventive action:

Do’s
1. Wash your hands regularly with soap for at least 20 seconds.
2. Wear a mask in crowded places and maintain respiratory etiquette.
3. Maintain physical distance from others.
4. Stay at home if you have flu-like symptoms and consult a healthcare worker.
5. Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing, and clean frequently touched surfaces.

Don’ts
1. Don’t ignore symptoms or attend gatherings if you’re feeling unwell.
2. Avoid close contact with sick individuals and don’t touch your face with unwashed hands.
3. Don’t share personal items like masks, utensils, or water bottles.
4. Don’t rely on misinformation—stay updated with trusted sources and follow local health guidelines to protect yourself and others.
