Chennai, 19 August (MTNews): The 7th Annual Medical Excellence Award of World Tamil Chamber of Commerce (WTCC) was held with the Governor of Nagaland, La Ganesan as the Chief Guest in Chennai on 19 August 2023.
Speaking during the award function, the Governor expressed his happiness to participate in a function to honour the “selfless, life-saving medical community.” He stated that health is the biggest wealth and that doctors sacrifice their family time and dedicate themselves to create a healthier society at the expense of their own health and sorrows and do the great work of protecting the lives and physical health of all.
The Governor also appreciated the President of the Global Organization of Tamil Origin and the World Tamil Chamber of Commerce, Selvakumar for doing the great job of identifying the best among the best and honoring them every year. “Even though it’s not possible to honour everyone, it definitely inspires the awardees and all the medical professionals to do even better,” he said.
Honoring the doctors, the Governor mentioned that during Covid-19 pandemic when everyone was afraid to move out of their homes fearing infection, the health professionals risked their lives boldly to safeguard the life of so many thousands and lakhs of peoples. He added that it is our duty to celebrate and cherish those selfless doctors, nurses and other paramedical professionals and recognize and honour them.
The Governor said that, according the World Health Organization, there should be one doctor for 1,000 people but India has one doctor for every 834 people and this is considered a great achievement in the medical field of India.
The Governor underlined that the hospitals in India’s metropolitan cities are improving their medical technology at par with the rest of the world through the intervention of Artificial Intelligence in diagnosis and robotics and nanotechnology. He expressed that the quality of treatment is at par with developed countries, especially in the treatments for heart disease, IVF treatments and organ transplants and the cost of these treatments in India is less than one-tenth compared to those of developed countries which has resulted in promoting ‘Medical Tourism’. Medical Tourism has increased by almost 200 percent in the last few years, he said.
The Governor said that India now has the world’s largest healthcare scheme, the Ayushman Bharat scheme, under the initiative of our PM Narendra Modi. The Governor added that this scheme benefits more than 50 crore Indians. The poor and the lower middle class now have access to affordable quality healthcare, he said.
The governor also saluted and thanked all the doctors for their dedicated efforts to help save lives and their effort to provide quality healthcare to patients throughout the country.
The Governor handed over the trophies and mementos to the awardees. He also lunched with Medical Excellence Directors during the function.
Others who spoke on the program were Medical Director Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital, Prof DR Gunasekaran and President, Tamil Nadu Medical Practitioners Association, Prof CMK Reddy.
The welcome address was given by President World Tamil Chamber of Commerce, Selvakumar and the vote of thanks was pronounced by Dr V Sathyanarayanan.
