The Governor of Nagaland, Nand Kishore Yadav, hosted a cultural programme and official dinner at Lok Bhavan, Kohima, in honour of delegates attending the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Athletics Federation of India on April 14, 2026.
Welcoming the delegates, the Governor described the occasion as historic, noting that it is the first time a national sports federation’s AGM has been held in Nagaland. He termed it a significant milestone in the state’s sporting journey and a reflection of inclusiveness and national integration.
He expressed appreciation to the federation for bringing the event to the state and acknowledged the leadership of Lalit Kumar Bhanot for his contributions to athletics in India and the South Asian region.
The Governor also commended Nagaland Athletics under the leadership of Abu Metha for promoting sports in the state, highlighting the successful hosting of the South Asian Cross-Country Championships and the ongoing AGM as key achievements.
Emphasising the sporting potential of Nagaland and the Northeast, he said the region’s youth have consistently demonstrated talent, discipline and resilience, and expressed confidence that greater support would enable them to excel at national and international levels.
In his welcome address, Abu Metha, Advisor to the Chief Minister, AFI Vice President and President of the Nagaland Athletics Association, thanked the Governor for hosting the delegates. He said the AGM serves as a platform to deliberate on sports administration, athlete development and the overall growth of athletics in the country.
He added that sports have the power to uplift individuals and communities and noted the presence of delegates from across India. He said the meeting aims to chart the future roadmap of athletics while reflecting national unity. He also highlighted the achievements of Nagaland athletes and ongoing grassroots efforts.
The programme was chaired by Kethosituo Sekhose, Director of Youth Resources and Sports, while the closing remarks were delivered by Thavaseelan K, Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor. Cultural performances by the North East Zone Cultural Centre showcased the rich traditions of the region.
