Nagaland govt officials reaffirm commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure for youth empowerment

Nagaland Minister of Housing and Mechanical Engineering, Bashangmongba Chang, underscored the significance of sports in youth development and community building while emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure in the state. He made these remarks as the special guest at the Nagaland Super League (NSL) Playoff 3, held at the Chümoukedima Football Stadium on 29 March 2025. The match saw Longterok FC clinch a 1-0 victory, securing their place in the final against Barak FC.

“His words were met with enthusiastic applause from the audience, further energizing the atmosphere of the event,” a DIPR report stated. Minister Chang also commended the efforts of the NSL organizers in promoting football in Nagaland. The event was graced by Advisor for Tribal Affairs and Election, H. Tovihoto Ayemi, as the honored guest, while Chief Secretary Dr. J Alam, IAS, and Director General of Police, Rupin Sharma, attended as special invitees.

Minister Chang lauded the NSL for fostering young talent and instilling sportsmanship. “Sports is not just about competition; it is about discipline, unity, and perseverance. Events like the Nagaland Super League play a crucial role in shaping the future of our athletes and providing them with a platform to shine,” he stated. He further reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure and development programs to nurture budding athletes.

Chief Secretary Dr J Alam extended his appreciation to the NSL management team for their dedication in successfully organizing the event. He acknowledged the challenges of managing a league of this scale and praised their commitment to promoting sports in Nagaland. Dr. Alam revealed that the state is currently implementing 50 sports projects worth approximately Rs. 170 crore, aimed at providing top-tier facilities for local athletes.

“All these efforts are for the young people of Nagaland,” Dr Alam said, reinforcing the government’s dedication to creating opportunities for aspiring athletes. He expressed confidence that with sustained investment and support, the NSL would continue to expand, fostering a vibrant sports culture in the state.

Advisor for Tribal Affairs and Election, H Tovihoto Ayemi, remarked that the NSL has become a major milestone for football in Nagaland. He noted that this inaugural league is a historic moment, signifying a new era for Naga football. “The NSL is more than just a competition; it embodies the unifying spirit of the sport and has the potential to elevate Nagaland to a powerhouse in football at both national and international levels,” he stated.

Ayemi also expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio for his steadfast support for sports. He highlighted football’s role in fostering unity, peace, and inspiration among the youth, noting that the league brings people together through their shared passion for the game. “With the right guidance and dedication, Nagaland is poised to make a mark in national and international football,” he added.

Director General of Police, Rupin Sharma, congratulated the NSL team for conceptualizing and successfully launching the league. He emphasized that the league is not only raising the standard of football in the state but also contributing to Nagaland’s economy in a positive way. Sharma expressed confidence that the exposure gained through the NSL would help young Naga players refine their skills and prepare them for larger opportunities in the sport.

He further expressed hope that some of the talented players emerging from the league would eventually join the Nagaland Police football team, reinforcing the department’s commitment to promoting sports within the force.

The program was hosted by Advisor for the Department of Youth Resources & Sports, S. Keoshu Yimkhiung, alongside Chairman of NSL and General Secretary of the Nagaland Football Association (NFA), Benei M. Lamthiu, MLA. The master of ceremonies for the evening was Imlisen Pongen.
