Kohima, 25 July (MTNews): KG Kenye, the Nagaland Government Spokesman and Minister for Power and Parliamentary Affairs, has reaffirmed the state’s position on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He emphasized that such a law would violate Article 371(A) of the Indian Constitution and poses a direct threat to the Naga Customary laws, as well as their social and religious practices.
Addressing the media in Kohima today, Kenye stated that the state government took into account the sentiments of the Naga people and officially registered their opposition to the UCC with the central government. He further reminded that Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, had assured the Nagaland government that the Centre was actively considering exempting Christians and certain tribal areas from the 22nd Law Commission Exercise related to UCC.
The Minister disclosed that on 4 July, the State Government had submitted a request to the Law Commission, urging them to exempt Nagaland from the ambit of the Uniform Civil Code.
Regarding the demands of Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO), Kenye conveyed that negotiations were reaching a conclusion. He asserted that the tripartite negotiation, which would involve the state government at all stages, was expected to lead to a final agreement. Kenye added that the tripartite meeting was imminent and could occur at any time.
