The Chairperson of the Nagaland State Human Rights Commission (NSHRC), Justice Songkhupchung Serto, along with his team, arrived in Zunheboto district on 28th February 2025 as part of their ongoing state tour.
Justice Serto began his visit by inspecting the ongoing construction of the Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) building. He then interacted with the School Management and Development Committee (SMDC) and teaching staff, where he was briefed on the school’s current status and the challenges it faced. During his address to the school administration, Justice Serto emphasized the critical role of educators in shaping the future of the state. “Though often unacknowledged, a teacher’s job is a noble service. Teachers are prime contributors to the building, development, and growth of society,” he stated. He further stressed that for Nagaland to be recognized as a developed state in the future, education must be prioritized.
Justice Serto also spoke to the faculty about the importance of individualized attention for students, noting that every child is differently abled and requires tailored guidance. He remarked, “The time teachers have with their students, though limited, can have a profound impact if they fulfill their moral duty with sincerity.”
The Principal of GHSS, in his honorary address, expressed gratitude for the visit, calling it a monumental occasion for the school. He added that it was the first time such a high-profile guest had visited the institution.
Later, Justice Serto and his team visited the district hospital, district jail, and police station in Zunheboto to further assess the state of public services. He also held a meeting with the district administration and various line departments. The programme concluded with a meeting with judicial officers, where Justice Serto discussed various issues related to the legal system and human rights.
Earlier, on 27th February, the NSHRC team had visited Satakha town and is scheduled to continue their tour with a visit to Atoizu on 1st March. The tour aims to strengthen the Commission’s engagement with local authorities and assess the human rights situation across the state.
