The Nagaland International Conference on Tourism, Transport, and Logistics commenced today at Niathu Conference Hall, Dimapur, under the theme “Empowering Nagaland, India through Connectivity and Sustainable Development.” Organized by the Business Association of Nagas (BAN), the conference brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and tourism stakeholders to discuss strategies for fostering economic growth through enhanced connectivity and sustainable tourism.

The event began with the felicitation of distinguished delegates, followed by a keynote address emphasizing the role of tourism, transport, and logistics in Nagaland’s long-term economic vision. The inaugural speech highlighted the state’s potential to leverage its rich cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and improved connectivity to boost regional development.

‘Tourism as a Driver for Regional Development’
The morning session featured a panel discussion on “Tourism as a Driver for Regional Development,” moderated by Thangi Mannen, Advisor, BAN & Former Secretary, Tourism, Government of Nagaland. Panelists discussed the impact of tourism on economic diversification, job creation, and sustainable development.

The panel included:
· Hekani Jakhalu, MLA & Advisor, Department of Industries & Commerce, who spoke on government policies supporting tourism as an economic pillar.
· Ryuta Saito, Second Secretary, Embassy of Japan, New Delhi, who highlighted potential international collaborations for Nagaland’s tourism sector.
· Nchumbemo Lotha, Secretary, Tourism Department, Government of Nagaland, who provided insights into state-led tourism initiatives.
· Vikas Ahluwalia, GM & National Head, Zone by The Park, who discussed the hospitality industry’s role in enhancing tourism experiences.
· Rakesh Mathur, Founding Member & Honorary President, Responsible Tourism Society of India (RTSOI), who shared best practices in responsible and sustainable tourism.
· Kejaroko, President, Nagaland Association of Tour Operators, who addressed the opportunities and challenges faced by local tour operators.
· Garab Dorji, Chairman, Guides Association of Bhutan (GAB), Thimphu, who shared Bhutan’s successful model for sustainable tourism development.

The session emphasized the importance of infrastructure, policy support, and community engagement in transforming the tourism industry.

Following the discussion, delegates proceeded for a networking lunch at 1:30 PM.

‘Focus on Responsible and Digital Tourism’
The afternoon session began with a presentation on “Responsible Tourism in India” by Rakesh Mathur, Founding Member & Honorary President, RTSOI. The session underscored the significance of eco-tourism, sustainable travel practices, and community-driven tourism models that align with Nagaland’s natural and cultural assets.

A workshop on “Building Your Tourism Business’ Digital Presence” was conducted by Yanpvuo Kikon, a digital transformation expert. The session focused on digital marketing strategies, leveraging social media for tourism promotion, and enhancing online visibility for businesses in the tourism sector.

The first day of the conference concluded with tea and networking, allowing participants to connect and explore potential collaborations in the tourism sector.

The conference will continue tomorrow, February 8, 2025, starting at 10:00 AM, with further discussions and expert-led sessions aimed at strengthening connectivity and sustainable development in Nagaland.
