Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio on Saturday officially launched the digitization of old manual birth and death certificates at his official chamber, marking a major step toward modernizing vital records in Nagaland.

Nagaland launches digitization of birth and death records
Speaking at the event, attended by Akunu S Meyase, IAS, Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, Department of Economics & Statistics, Neidilhou Keditsu, Director of the department, and other officials, the CM said the initiative will streamline service delivery, ensure accurate data, and improve citizen access to essential documents.

“This initiative will also help the government make informed public policy decisions,” Dr. Rio added, while commending the department for its efforts and urging citizens to register births and deaths promptly.

Following the directives of the Office of the Registrar General of India (ORGI), Ministry of Home Affairs, the state introduced online registration of births and deaths in April 2022. With the new launch, the issuance of manual certificates will soon be discontinued, and all old records will be integrated into a fully digital system.

The department emphasized that only genuine certificates issued by the registrar and verified information will be digitized, ensuring authenticity and secure access for future use. Citizens are encouraged to access the ORGI portal (dc.crsorgi.gov.in) to update their records and contribute to building a comprehensive database.

Officials said the digitization move will reduce paperwork, provide faster services, and strengthen the reliability of vital records across the state, making it easier for residents to access birth and death certificates anytime, anywhere.

Dr Rio described the initiative as a “significant step toward efficiency and transparency in government services” and called on citizens to take full advantage of the online facilities.

With Nagaland moving to 100 percent online registration, this launch represents a major milestone in the state’s push toward digital governance, promising smoother, faster, and more accessible services for all.
