A new District Planning Office was inaugurated at Peren on Monday, with Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang describing the facility as part of a broader effort to strengthen governance and accelerate the development of the district’s emerging administrative hub.
Speaking at the inauguration program, Zeliang said the establishment of the District Planning Office was long overdue and would play an important role in planning, coordinating, monitoring and evaluating developmental programs in the district.
He said the office forms part of ongoing efforts to build administrative infrastructure in the extended model township and the New District Headquarters area, which is being developed as a centre for governance and public service delivery.
According to the Deputy Chief Minister, developmental activities in Peren have gained momentum in recent years, with roads, government buildings and other public infrastructure gradually taking shape.
Emphasising the importance of effective planning, he called on departments, engineers, contractors and implementing agencies to ensure strict adherence to approved project reports, quality standards and timelines.
Zeliang also urged government officials posted in the district to make use of residential quarters and other facilities provided by the government, saying their presence would contribute to the growth of the new administrative township.
“The vision is not merely to construct government buildings, but to develop a thriving township that will serve as a hub of administration and public services,” he said.
Deputy Commissioner Hiazu Meru said the new office would strengthen the functioning of the District Planning and Development Board (DPDB), which serves as a key platform for addressing developmental issues through coordination among government departments.
Highlighting development initiatives in the district, Meru pointed to efforts to promote agricultural products under the “Green Peren” brand and stressed the need to strengthen economic activities, particularly in the agriculture and allied sectors.
He also called for stronger biosecurity measures to minimise the impact of African Swine Fever on farmers and livestock producers.
Meru said the New District Headquarters is being developed in accordance with its master plan and acknowledged the contribution of the Planning and Transformation Department towards expanding infrastructure in the area.
The program was attended by district officials, departmental representatives and members of the public. Technical details of the project were presented by Executive Engineer (Planning) Er Haulimchoba Chang.
