Mokokchung, 30 September (MTNews): Nagaland observed the nationwide cleanliness drive on Saturday, a day ahead of the proposed date declared by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi for “one hour of shramdaan for swachhata,” which precedes Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.

 

A day ahead of the rest of the country, the nationwide cleanliness drive in Mokokchung was spearheaded by Chumlamo Humtsoe, the ADC and Administrator of the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC). All 18 wards of Mokokchung town participated in this cleanliness drive.

Governor La Ganesan participated in the one-hour Shramdaan for Swachhta campaign on Saturday morning, leading a cleanliness drive from Raj Bhavan junction to the Heritage site. He was joined by the staff of Raj Bhavan and the Kohima Municipal Council. Governor Ganesan emphasized that cleanliness is a collective responsibility, as it helps prevent diseases and improves the quality of life. He urged every citizen to engage in daily cleaning efforts in their surroundings, villages, and streets for a healthier lifestyle.

 

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed his gratitude to the citizens of Nagaland who participated in the nationwide campaign. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for leading the initiative.

 

Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton, along with the District Administration of Wokha and BJP Karyakartas, also participated in the cleanliness drive. Patton emphasized that this initiative is not just about cleaning one’s surroundings but also about instilling a sense of responsibility toward the environment. He encouraged everyone to pledge to continue Mahatma Gandhi’s vision for a clean and prosperous India.

 

The cleanliness drive was held in all parts of the state. The nationwide cleanliness drive, scheduled to be held on 1 October, a Sunday, as called by the Prime Minister of India was opposed by various organizations in Nagaland. Consequently, the state government rescheduled the event to Saturday, a day ahead of the rest of the country.
