World Hepatitis Day 2025, under the global theme “Hepatitis – Let’s Break It Down”, was observed at the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare, Kohima on 28th July 2025.

Principal Director of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Mereninla Senlem, in her keynote address, spoke on the significance of World Hepatitis Day, stating that the occasion offers an opportunity to step up efforts against hepatitis and underscores the need for a greater response to the cause. “The campaign is a reminder to act now to expand access, integrate care, and end hepatitis as a public health problem by 2030,” she said.
She explained that World Hepatitis Day is observed every year on 28th July to raise awareness on viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver that causes severe liver disease and liver cancer. The theme calls for dismantling financial, social, and systemic barriers that hinder hepatitis elimination and liver cancer prevention, while also stressing the importance of expanding access to vaccination, safe injection practices, testing, and treatment.
Dr. Senlem noted that with the launch of the National Viral Hepatitis Control Program (NVHCP) in 2018, Nagaland introduced the program in 2019 and has been working towards the SDG goal of eliminating viral hepatitis by 2030.
Mission Director of NHM, Dr. Avile Zao, in her address, described the 2025 theme as a powerful call to break silence, stigma, and transmission. She spoke on causes, prevention, and treatments, and highlighted state-level progress, including free screening, treatment, and immunization.
She reported that in 2024–25, Nagaland recorded Hepatitis B prevalence at 2.4%, Hepatitis C at 4.01%, and Hepatitis B among pregnant women at 0.8%, with Dimapur showing the highest prevalence.
