The Directorate of Health & Family Welfare (DHFW) observed World Zoonoses Day on 7th July 2025, in line with the global commemoration, at the IDSP Hall, DHFW.
The event was chaired by Dr. Limasenla Lemtur, State Epidemiologist, who welcomed the attendees and emphasized the purpose of the gathering—to raise awareness, combat zoonotic diseases, and foster collaboration to protect public health.
A PowerPoint presentation on the current zoonotic disease scenario in Nagaland was delivered by Dr. Nounengulie Kire, Consultant/Public Health Specialist.
Dr. Mereninla Senlem, Principal Director of Health & Family Welfare, delivered the keynote address. She underscored the importance of the ‘One Health’ approach, which recognizes the interconnectedness of humans, animals, plants, and the broader ecosystem. She also highlighted the need for collaboration with allied departments to intensify awareness and prevention efforts.
During the interactive session, Dr. Amenla Walling, Joint Director, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, noted that their department has primarily focused on the clinical aspect rather than prevention. She stressed the devastating impact zoonotic diseases can have if not treated or prevented in time and emphasized the need for coordination with the Medical Department to share data on reported dog bite cases.
The programme was attended by officers from the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, as well as officials and staff from the Directorate. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Nounengulie Kire.
