Following reports of large number of Indians including 33 individuals from Nagaland being reportedly lured into Southeast Asian countries by promising high paying jobs only to be trapped in forced cybercrime operations in Southeast Asian countries in what has been described as ‘Cyber Slavery’, Nagaland Police has set up a Control Room to assist stranded individuals and their families from the state who may require support.
According to the Bureau of Immigration, Ministry of Home, Government of India, 73,138 Indians travelled to Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, and Vietnam between January 2022 and May 2024, out of which 30,000 have not returned. According to reports, their passports are often confiscated, leaving them trapped and vulnerable.
