The recently released India Tourism Statistics 2022 Report by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India revealed a grim reality of the tourism sector in Nagaland.
According to the report, in the ‘State wise/UTs Domestic and Foreign Tourist Visits 2020-21’category,
recorded 10,979 domestic tourists and 518 foreign tourists in 2020. In 2021, the number of domestic tourists was 23,968 while the number of foreign tourists recorded was 325.
There was a 118.31% growth rate in the number of domestic tourist visits in between 2020-21 but saw a decline by 37.26% in the foreign tourists. This is expected to have been contributed largely by the Covid pandemic.
Meanwhile, in the percentage share and ranks of different State/UTs in domestic and foreign tourist visits during 2021, Nagaland ranked 36 in the Domestic Tourist visits and 29 in the Foreign Tourist visits
Nagaland also recorded zero Travel Trade Service Providers in the country as of June 30, 2022. Travel Trade Service Providers includes Green Shoots/Start Ups, Tour Operators, Travel Agent, and Tourist Transport Operators which were all nil for Nagaland.
Nagaland also recorded only 20 hotels of Bed & Breakfast (B&B) establishments with 81 rooms and zero Guest Houses, Apartment Hotels, Heritage Hotels and hotels that are ranked from 1 star to 5 star were not recorded in the list of ‘Approved Hotels’ by the Ministry to conform to the standards of the different classes of tourists.
