Nagaland continues to struggle in student learning outcomes, particularly in Mathematics, across key school stages, according to the PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan (PRS) Report 2024 released by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Nagaland.

The national survey, earlier known as the National Achievement Survey, was conducted by PARAKH under NCERT, Ministry of Education, on December 4, 2024. It assessed competencies in Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Science among students of Grades 3, 6 and 9. In Nagaland, the survey covered 22,220 students and over 3,335 teachers from 724 schools across the state. Performance was analysed across gender, location, school management type and social group.

At the Foundational Stage (Grade 3), Nagaland’s overall performance was below the national average, with Mathematics emerging as a major area of concern. Phek and Mokokchung districts recorded the highest scores in the state, while Kiphire and Tuensang ranked at the bottom. Kiphire was also listed among the 50 lowest performing districts in the country at this level.

For the Preparatory Stage (Grade 6), student performance remained below the national average, particularly in Mathematics, placing Nagaland among the bottom 10 performing states nationwide.

Mokokchung and Phek again featured among the top districts in the state, while Noklak, Mon, Shamator, Tuensang and Kiphire were ranked at the lower end. Noklak, Shamator and Kiphire were included among the 50 lowest performing districts in the country in this category.

At the Middle Stage (Grade 9), students in Nagaland performed above the national average in Language but continued to lag behind in Mathematics, Science and Social Science. Kohima, Mokokchung and Dimapur emerged as the top performing districts, whereas Shamator, Kiphire, Noklak and Mon remained at the bottom. Shamator and Kiphire once again featured among the 50 lowest performing districts nationally.

The report noted that none of the districts from Nagaland figured among the top performing districts at the national level in any of the grades assessed.

The PRS Report 2024 is expected to serve as a key evidence base for district and state level planning, with officials stating that the findings will guide data driven reforms aimed at improving the quality, equity and relevance of school education in the state.
