Nagaland University celebrated the 80th Independence Day with a National Flag hoisting ceremony and commemorative programme at its headquarters in Lumami on Saturday.

The National Flag was hoisted at Rajiv Gandhi Park at 10 a.m., followed by an address by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jagadish K. Patnaik. Reflecting on India’s development, he said independence should mean “affording the opportunity to all to be what we are with the resources made available to us.”
He highlighted India’s progress in technology, space exploration and deep tech, while stressing the need to bridge the rural-urban divide to realise the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. He also called for greater support to Gen Z, particularly young entrepreneurs and researchers working in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, aerospace technology, advanced robotics and other emerging fields.
At I. Ihoshe Kinimi Hall, Guest of Honour and Padma Shri 2026 awardee Guru Sangyusang S. Pongener emphasised the importance of preserving oral traditions and indigenous identity. Sharing his personal connection with Nagaland’s songs, dances and oral narratives, he said the Padma Shri recognition belonged to the community and dedicated it to generations who preserved its traditions. Registrar Dr. Abemo urged the gathering to stand against casteism, hatred and communalism and take responsibility for India’s future.
The programme featured cultural performances and concluded with the National Anthem.
