Nagaland University celebrated National Sports Day with a special felicitation ceremony on August 29 at I. Ihoshe Kinimi Hall, Lumami. The event was graced by Prof. MK Sinha, VC In-Charge, as the chief guest. Organized by the Sports Section of Nagaland University, the ceremony honored Vizovor Liezietsu, a prominent sports icon, for his remarkable contributions to Indian football as a goalkeeper.
In his address, Prof. MK Sinha emphasized, “The aim of National Sports Day is to raise public awareness about the role of sports in daily life and to pay tribute to our national sports heroes.” He highlighted the economic impact of the sports sector, stating, “The sports industry has grown by 11% in 2024, benefiting individuals and society alike. Sports fosters inclusivity, allowing everyone the opportunity to participate and excel without discrimination.” He also noted, “To expand our economy and create youth employment, we must promote sports in both urban and rural areas.”
In his speech, Vizovor Liezietsu reflected on his journey representing India in various football competitions. He described his career as a blend of challenges and successes, where discipline and mental strength were crucial both on and off the field. He remarked, “Sports is not just about entertainment and fitness; it is a crucial element of nation-building. In India, sports unite people, bridging gaps of language, culture, and geography.” He encouraged young athletes to pursue their dreams with dedication and perseverance: “Dream big, work hard, and never give up. Success is challenging, but every setback is a chance to learn and grow. Stay committed to your goals and value the journey as much as the destination.”
It may be mentioned that Vizovor Liezietsu was part of the India U-17 AFC World Cup Qualifying Round 2003-04, Mohun Bagan AC, Mohun Bagan Sail Football Academy, and City Athletic Club Kolkata. He also represented Nagaland five times in the Santosh Trophy in the U-17 and U-19 categories and played for Naga Boys Club and the DGP Team. Now, as an AFC C Licence coach and the President of Football Licence Coaches of Kohima District (FLCoKD), he continues to coach state teams that have competed in national games, while also working in the police force.
Dr Abemo, Registrar of NU, as Guest of Honor, praised Vizovor Liezietsu for his sports excellence and emphasized, “While sports is one aspect, hard work is indispensable in all areas of life.”
The formal program, chaired by Dr Ashutosh Tripathi, Asst. Professor, Dept of EVS, Nagaland University, included a welcome address by Dr Harish Kumar Tiwari, DDS, Nagaland University, and concluded with a vote of thanks from Ashish Kumar, Hindi Officer & AR In-Charge to the Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University.
As part of National Sports Day festivities, a fitness competition was held on August 28 at the university gymnasium. Wewu-U Kapfo (Female Category) and Y Yato (Male Category) emerged as winners among PG and Research Scholars, while Pooja Devi (Female Category) and Prof. Ambrish Singh (Male Category) won first place among staff members.
