The Department of Anthropology, Nagaland University, conducted a one-day workshop on “Emerging Areas of Research in Biological and Cultural Anthropology: An Interdisciplinary Approach” on March 21, 2025. The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Jagadish K. Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University and Chief Patron of the event. Prof. M.S. Rawat, Dean, School of Science, and Prof. M.K. Sinha, Dean, School of Social Sciences, were also present as patrons.


Around 100 research scholars and students from Nagaland University and other Northeastern universities participated in the workshop. The primary focus was on the interdisciplinary applications of Anthropology, particularly its connections with science and social sciences. Key areas of discussion included molecular anthropology, human genetics, evolutionary anthropology and adaptation, human rights, criminology, and anthropology.

Prof. Arup Ratan Bandyopadhyay, from the Department of Anthropology, University of Calcutta, delivered the keynote address on skin pigmentation variation in relation to human genetics and molecular anthropology, with a focus on ecological adaptation.

Prof. Ranjit Kumar, from the Department of Zoology, Nagaland University, presented the plenary lecture on cancer research, covering both basic and advanced approaches, with a special emphasis on his research at the university.

Prof. Upasana Bora Sinha, Head, Department of Chemistry, Nagaland University, delivered a plenary lecture on fellowship programs, career opportunities in research, and ethical considerations.

Prof. Sutapa Choudhury, from the Department of Anthropology, University of Calcutta, delivered the valedictory address on criminal psychology and the role of anthropological studies.

The participants provided positive feedback, particularly appreciating the academic value and relevance of the workshop.
