Nagaland University organized a workshop on “Substance Free Healthy Life” on November 25 at Lumami under the Government of India’s Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan and Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 3.0.

Dr. Lobeno Mozhui, Chairperson of the inaugural ceremony, highlighted the alarming rise of drug and tobacco use in the state. Quoting the Director General of Police Rupin Sharma, she said Nagaland has an estimated 1.2 lakh drug users, with heroin, sunflower drugs, and tobacco among the most prevalent. “43.3% of adults in Nagaland use tobacco—well above the national average of 28.6%,” she added.
Vice-Chancellor Prof MK Sinha stressed, “Wisdom lies in a healthy body and mind.” He warned that substance use weakens health and negatively affects families and society. He urged stricter regulation of tobacco supply despite Nagaland being a dry state.
The technical session by S Limawapang, Program Manager, Care & Counselling, Mokokchung, delved into the social and cultural factors driving smokeless tobacco use among youth, highlighting severe health risks including gum disease, tooth decay, and cardiovascular problems. Limawapang emphasized education, awareness, and healthy lifestyle interventions to combat substance abuse.
The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by Rumi Thar, appreciating participants and organizers for promoting wellness and awareness in Nagaland.
