Nagaland University’s Kohima Campus celebrated International Women’s Day on March 9 with a programme attended by teachers, non-teaching staff, research scholars and students. The event was organised by the Women’s Studies Centre on the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” as announced by the United Nations, along with the campaign theme for International Women’s Day 2026, “Give to Gain.”

The programme was chaired by Dr. Kethokhrienuo Belho. Prof. Buno Zetsuvi of the Department of Education invoked God’s blessing for the gathering, while Ms. Narola Chuba, Director-in-charge of the Women’s Studies Centre, delivered the welcome address. In her remarks, she stressed the need for greater support to strengthen the centre’s work in research on women and gender issues.
The International Women’s Day address was delivered by Prof. Jano S. Liegise, Dean of the School of Humanities and Education, Nagaland University. She noted that Women’s Day was initially observed to advocate equal rights for women, including equal pay for equal work and suffrage. Highlighting the important role of women in shaping families, communities and nations, she emphasised the need to address challenges faced by women, including discrimination, violence and limited opportunities. She called for meaningful steps to ensure that women receive equal rights and opportunities.
Prof. N. Venuh, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, attended the programme as the Guest of Honour. In his address, he emphasised the importance of the role of men within the family and institutions in supporting women’s growth and contributing to societal development. He also stressed the need for mutual respect and understanding between men and women, stating that social progress depends on respect and dignity in human relationships.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Boyillapalli Venkata Rao, Associate Professor in the Department of Education.
