At the Kohima campus, the vibrant programme organised by the Sports Section brought together students, faculty, and distinguished guests in a spirit of unity, highlighting the values of discipline, teamwork, and community that sports instill. The programme was chaired by Mesanguto Meru, Assistant Director of Sports, and commenced with a welcome note, followed by an address from Prof. N. Venuh, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, Kohima Campus. In his keynote speech, Prof. Venuh underscored the transformative role of sports in education and personal development, remarking that “sports reduce stress, provide valuable life skills, and promote teamwork while fostering a sense of community.” His words resonated with the audience and set the tone for the day’s events.

The gathering rose for the University Anthem, after which Kikruvinuo and Tiakumla from the Department of History & Archaeology (3rd Semester) delivered a melodious rendition of “Top of the World,” adding a cultural note to the occasion. A highlight of the programme was the Oath Taking Ceremony, led by Sports Secretary Phuyeka Yeptho, who called upon participants to uphold fairness, respect, and sportsmanship in every contest.

The event continued with the official kick-off of the ADSW Cup, marked by a spirited volleyball match between teaching and non-teaching staff, which drew enthusiastic cheers from the audience and set the competitive spirit in motion. It was followed by a volleyball match between first-year and final-year students, and three inter-departmental football matches.

Observed annually on August 29 to honor hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, National Sports Day serves as a reminder of the enduring importance of sports in health, education, and nation-building. Nagaland University’s commemoration reflects this vision, fostering camaraderie and a commitment to the holistic development of its students.
