The Tribal Research Centre (TRC) of Nagaland University, in collaboration with the Department of Sociology, Nagaland University, Lumami, observed the ‘International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples’ on 9th August 2024 (Friday) at the Conference Hall, Department of Sociology. The event was held under the theme “Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact.” The program was chaired by Dr. Srikanth Yamsani, Assistant Professor at TRC.
Prof. Athungo Ovung, Director of TRC and Head of the Department of Sociology, delivered the welcome address. This was followed by a Naga folk song performed by research scholars from the department and a special talk by Prof. Lanusashi Longkumar from the Department of Geography, Nagaland University.
In his talk, Prof. Lanusashi emphasized the importance of recognizing the rich cultural heritage, profound wisdom, and enduring resilience of Indigenous peoples worldwide. He highlighted that Indigenous communities have been stewards of our planet’s natural resources for millennia, possessing a deep understanding of the environment and sustainable living. However, despite their invaluable contributions, Indigenous people have faced, and continue to face, significant challenges. He urged that it is our collective responsibility to support their rights, advocate for justice, and ensure that their voices are heard and respected.
The lecture was followed by another folk song performed by MA Sociology students and a screening of the short documentary titled ‘A Future for Taiwan’s Indigenous People,’ a DW Documentary. The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Sandeep Gupta, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology.
