Nagaland University observed National Sports Day with sporting activities at its Kohima Campus on August 28, bringing together students, teaching and non-teaching staff in a display of sportsmanship and unity.
The programme was chaired by Dr Mesangutuo Meru, Assistant Director of Sports. NUSU-K Games and Sports Secretary Toka Lohe delivered the welcome address, followed by a special song by Bilila Sangtam of the Department of Psychology. Dr Ditalak Mpanme, President of NUTA-K, addressed the gathering and inaugurated the sporting events.
In football, the Senior Team defeated the Junior Team. Basketball saw victories for the non-teaching staff over the teaching staff, the Women’s Senior Team over the Junior Team, and the Men’s Junior Team over the Senior Team. In volleyball, the Women’s Junior Team defeated the Senior Team, the staff team beat the students, and the Men’s Senior Team defeated the Junior Team.
The celebrations were also held at the School of Agricultural Sciences, Medziphema Campus, on August 27. Prof Dipak Sinha, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Medziphema Campus, was the chief guest. He highlighted the importance of sports in higher education under the National Education Policy, saying sports should be recognised as an integral part of students’ curricular and holistic development.
Football and volleyball competitions were held, with students and staff participating enthusiastically. The events were coordinated by the university’s Sports Section.
