Nagaland University organizes seminar for research scholars and educationists

The Department of Education, Nagaland University, organized a one-day seminar for research scholars and educationists on November 6, 2025, under the theme “Education and Social Responsibilities.” The event, held at the university campus, brought together 95 participants from within and outside Nagaland for a day of academic reflection, exchange, and dialogue.

In her opening remarks, Prof. Lungsang Zeliang, Head of the Department, explained the conceptualization of the seminar as a reminder of the deep connection between education and society. She highlighted the importance of understanding the evolving landscape of higher education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Expressing pride in the achievements of the Department’s alumni, she emphasized the role of teachers in preparing responsible citizens who contribute meaningfully to society.

Dr. Zavise Rume, Director of the International University, Nagaland, addressed the inaugural session and spoke on the need to create a knowledge-based society through dynamic academic programs. He noted that traditional Naga practices and values could be integrated with modern educational systems to create a balanced model. Commending local community involvement in education, Dr. Rume said indigenous wisdom and modern technology can coexist and strengthen each other.

The inaugural programme, chaired by Dr. B. Venkata Rao, Associate Professor, featured an invocation by Dr. Anu G. S., a special musical presentation by Ph.D. scholars, and a vote of thanks by Dr. M. R. N. Babu.

The first technical session was led by Prof. Buno Liegise, who spoke on the main theme ”Education and Social Responsibilities.” She discussed the root meaning of education and provided a broad overview of education policies, particularly the features of NEP 2020 that emphasize multidisciplinary, holistic, and transformative learning. Prof. Liegise noted that Nagaland University has taken early steps toward implementing NEP 2020 through multidisciplinary programs, vocational courses, and the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP). She stressed that social responsibility requires individuals and institutions to act in ways that benefit society and urged participants to be ambassadors of education by sharing knowledge and developing 21st-century skills.

The second session, chaired by Dr. Neizo-ü Mero, featured Ms. Narola Chuba as the resource person. She discussed the issues, challenges, and advantages of the FYUGP, particularly the Multidisciplinary approach, Multiple Entry and Exit System (MEES), internships, and increased teacher workload. While acknowledging the challenges, she also highlighted its benefits, such as greater flexibility, career readiness, and deeper learning. The seminar concluded with a constructive discussion, leaving participants inspired to adapt to the evolving educational landscape.
