Nagaland University promotes pulses farming with awareness

On November 17, 2025, a one-day awareness-cum-input distribution program on the promotion of pulses in the NEH region (Nagaland Centre) was held at Peducha Village. The program was organized by ICAR-AICRP on Kharif Pulses, SAS, Nagaland University, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Pulses Research (IIPR), Kanpur; SAMETI, Medziphema; Department of Botany, Kohima Science College; Department of Agriculture, Government of Nagaland; and the Department of Soil and Water Conservation, Research and Training Centre, Sechu, Zubza.


Dr Aditya Pratap, PC, AICRP on Kharif Pulses, was the Special Guest, while Prof Dipak Sinha, PVC, Medziphema Campus, Nagaland University, served as Guest of Honor, and Dr Hironya Kumar Borah, Chief Scientist, RARS Shillongani, was the Special Invitee.

The program was compered by Dr Akumla Longchar, Scientist, AICRP on Kharif Pulses, and the welcome address was delivered by Mr. Kavi Sumi, Scientist, AICRP on Kharif Pulses. Farmers were addressed by collaborators, namely Shri Bodevi Shyuya, Director SAMETI and Principal IETC, Govt of Nagaland; Dr Samadangla Ao, Associate Professor, Department of Botany, KSC; Shri Kekhrieletuo Yhome, DAO, Dept of Agriculture; and Zuchumi Ovung, JSCO, Department of Soil and Water Conservation.

A brief presentation on the Kharif Pulses Program was made by Dr Lawrence Kithan, Scientist, AICRP on Kharif Pulses, SAS, Nagaland University, while Dr Hironya Kumar Borah highlighted the importance of pulses and farmers’ contribution.

Dr Aditya Pratap spoke on pulses as a primary protein source, relevant government policies, and the potential of pulses in Nagaland, applauding the AICRP on Kharif Pulses for reaching farmers at the grassroots level. Prof. Dipak Sinha praised the program’s efficiency and the collaborative effort between the Ministry of Agriculture, ICAR, Nagaland University, and state departments in benefiting farmers.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Rokozeno, Scientist, AICRP on Kharif Pulses. A total of 62 farmers received inputs, including knapsack sprayers, seeds (Chickpea and Pea), milled arhar (dal) Minchu, Pseudomonas sp., scrappers, and sickles.
