As anticipation builds for the 29th Nagaland Wrestling Championship 2024, set to take place at the IG Stadium Kohima on 26 March, the spotlight shines on 90-year-old Mamho Chakhrüno, who has been chosen as the brand ambassador for the prestigious event. Chakhrüno captured hearts across Nagaland with his recent appearances at the Northern Angami Wrestling and Chakhesang Wrestling meets, where he was seen carrying a traditional basket filled with local delicacies.
The announcement was made during a press conference held at the NOA office in Kohima on Sunday. The day-long championship event will be managed by Botsa Baptist Church.
Dr Haibe Zeliang, President of the Nagaland Wrestling Association, informed that 54 wrestlers, including 18 top contenders from the Angami Sports Association, Chakhesang Wrestling Association, and Zeliang Wrestling Association, will compete for the coveted title.
The winner will receive a grand prize package totaling Rs 3.50 lakhs, including a cash prize of Rs 3.20 lakhs, a champion belt, the Velahu Puro Memorial Trophy, and Rs 30,000 in additional rewards. Runners-up and semifinalists will also be rewarded for their efforts. Two-time reigning NWA champion Venuzo Dawhuo will defend his title for the third time.
The championship aims to not only celebrate the rich tradition of Naga wrestling but also to gain recognition on the international stage. With the President of United World Wrestling and officials from the International Federation of Wrestling on Belts Alysh expected to attend, the event serves as a platform to showcase Naga wrestling as a distinguished indigenous discipline.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Deputy CM TR Zeliang will grace the occasion as the special guest and guest of honour respectively for the championship. The association has informed that entry tickets will be Rs 3000 for donors, chair (1st row) at Rs 1000, 2nd row onwards at Rs 500, and gallery tickets have been fixed at Rs 100.
