Special guest MLA A. Pongshi Phom said the festival could become a stepping stone for rural economic growth in Longleng. He said taro has long served Nagas as both a staple and a “finest gift” during difficult times, and noted that Pongo produces some of the best taro consumed across the State.

He announced that as part of the festival’s first edition, plans have been drawn up for marketing and storage/packaging facilities, identification of transport agencies, provision of tools and equipment, healthcare support for farmers, scientific cultivation training and subsidies. He assured support for Pongo in taking these initiatives forward.

Pongshi also said lack of confidence and a mindset of seeking shortcuts hinder local entrepreneurship. He encouraged educated youth to pursue self-employment and criticised illegal taxation, saying it “pulls down the visions and dreams of young entrepreneurs.” He urged the public to implement welfare schemes sincerely to improve the local economy.

Deputy Commissioner W. Manpai Phom said the festival is the first of its kind in the district and informed that technical sessions with KVK Longleng experts will be held to promote scientific farming. He said Pongo, a historical village already declared a tourist village, has opportunities for agri-tourism, and called on youth to explore ways to promote it.

District Horticulture Officer Talimeran praised the farmers for their efforts, saying the festival celebrates their contribution. Representatives from the Phom People’s Council and Pongo Village Council also delivered greetings, while cultural troupes performed folk dances and songs during the program.
