Nagaland’s Y Nuklu Phom honored with ‘Changemaker for Commons’ award

Y Nuklu Phom from Nagaland was honored with the ‘Changemakers for Commons’ award at The Commons Convening held at the Ambedkar International Center, New Delhi, on August 27. He received the award for his exemplary grassroots work in community conservation. Among the seven people from India shortlisted as changemakers, Phom was recognized for his significant contributions.


The Commons Convening is organized by partners including Common Ground, the Foundation for Ecological Security (FES), the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), UNDP India, and Collaborating for Resilience. The event aims to highlight the importance of commons in public discourse, encourage civic engagement, and inspire collective action.

During the event, Y Nuklu Phom shared the story of his community’s transition from hunting to wildlife conservation in Yaongyimchen village, Longleng district. This shift has contributed to the broader conservation efforts for Amur falcons. The event runs from August 27 to 30. In addition to this recognition, Y Nuklu Phom is also a recipient of the Whitley Award for biodiversity conservation and serves as the team leader of LEMSACHENLOK in Longleng.
