The two-day National Workshop on Elderly Issues, organised by the Department of Sociology, Nagaland University, Lumami, concluded on 16 October 2025. Dr. Yamsani Srikanth chaired the valedictory session and, in his remarks, highlighted the significance of such academic forums in bridging research and policy. He emphasised that ageing should be approached within the broader framework of social inclusion and dignity.
Dr. Pitheli K. Jimo provided a summary of the workshop, noting key themes such as interdisciplinary healthcare challenges for the elderly, expert insights on research and policy, and the importance of community-based and sustainable elder care. She added that the workshop fostered rich discussions and collaboration among scholars, practitioners, and students on ageing issues.
A special performance was presented by Repa Tzudir, a research scholar, whose melodious song added a warm and reflective tone to the session. Prof. Kilangla Jamir, Dean of the School of Social Sciences, delivered an address on issues affecting the elderly. She highlighted the growing importance of gerontological studies in India amid demographic changes and a rising elderly population.
Prof. Jamir stressed the role of academic institutions in raising awareness of older adults’ experiences and advocated for policy interventions to address their challenges. She encouraged participants to engage with the elderly community through research and advocacy.
The session concluded with a Vote of Thanks from Dr. Suraj Beri, who expressed gratitude to the resource persons, participants, and the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD) for their support and active involvement. The valedictory session ended on a positive note, reaffirming the academic community’s commitment to building an inclusive society that values and respects the elderly.
