In accordance with the Ministry of Education and the Department of Higher Education, the Chairman of the Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) has informed all concerned parties about the recent approval of the Central Sector Scheme, PM-Vidyalaxmi, by the Union Cabinet on November 6, 2024.

The PM-Vidyalaxmi scheme aims to provide financial support to meritorious students seeking admission in India’s top 860 quality higher education institutions (QHEIs). The scheme will facilitate the easy availability of collateral and guarantee-free education loans for over 22 lakh students admitted to these institutions every year. Additionally, students with family incomes of up to Rs. 8 lakh will receive a 3% interest subvention on their education loans.

The scheme builds on the existing PM-Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan (PM-USP) Scheme, which provides credit guarantee cover for loans up to Rs. 7.5 lakh and full interest subvention for technical courses to students with a family income of up to Rs. 4.5 lakh.

The PM-Vidyalaxmi scheme, together with PM-USP, will offer comprehensive support to deserving students who wish to pursue higher education in India’s top-tier institutions. A dedicated portal is being developed by the Department of Higher Education to ensure a transparent, simple, and entirely digital process for students applying for financial support.

The NBSE has urged heads of educational institutions to raise awareness about the PM-Vidyalaxmi scheme, emphasizing the importance of eliminating financial barriers to higher education.
