Kohima, November 9 (MTNews):  In a significant move the chairman of Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE), Asano Sekhose has notified all concerned that the NBSE will be introducing two levels of Mathematics question papers from the HSLC Examination 2024. The system is being introduced in accordance with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 (4.38) to allow some students to do their subject at the standard level and some at a higher level according to their choice so as to reduce pressure on examination.

The features of the scheme maintain that the two levels of question papers in Mathematics will be introduced starting from the HSLC Examination 2024 and will be known as Mathematics A and Mathematics B.

Mathematics A will be of higher standard and equivalent to the existing one while Mathematics B will be of relatively lower difficulty level.

It also stated that the syllabus, classroom teaching and internal assessment will remain the same. All students will study the same textbook, attend the same classroom and have the usual internal assessment. The weightage of marks will remain as 80 external and 20 internal. Students will have all the opportunity and ample time to test their aptitude and interest until the end of the course to decide on which of the two levels of Mathematics they wish to sit for at the HSLC Examination.

The students shall be allowed to mention their choice in their online application forms for the HSLC Examination.

It also mentioned that a student who fails to score the qualifying mark in Mathematics B will not be allowed to switch to Mathematics A in the subsequent examinations, i.e. in the Compartmental Examination or as a repeater in the next examination, as the case may be.

And in case a student fails to score the qualifying mark in the Mathematics A, the student will be eligible to sit in either Mathematics A or Mathematics B in the subsequent examinations, i.e. in Compartmental Examination or as a Repeater in the next examination as the case may be, subject to fulfillment of other criteria.

And  in case a student who has scored a qualifying mark in Mathematics B but wishes to switch to Mathematics A may apply for improvement in the June/July examination, subject to fulfillment of other criteria.
It was further mentioned that only those students who qualify in the Mathematics A will be eligible for taking Mathematics in Class XI.

It was informed that the question paper design of Mathematics B will be made available in the Board’s portal www.nbsenl.edu.in at a later date. All other information relating to this scheme of two levels of Mathematics will be notified at a later date as and when the need arises, it added.

The Heads of Institutions have been requested to disseminate this information to the subject teachers to guide the students who will be studying in Class X in their respective institutions at the start of the next academic year.
