47-member contingent from 25 Naga Bn summits Mount Saramati amid harsh conditions

A 47-member team from 25 Naga Battalion NCC, Mokokchung, under NCC Team Kohima, successfully summited Mount Saramati, the highest peak in Nagaland, on March 19 at 0630 hrs, marking the first-ever NCC expedition to the 12,602-foot summit.

The expedition, which brought together 2 officers, 3 non-commissioned officers, 4 associate NCC officers, and 38 cadets, completed the climb after a demanding four-day journey marked by extreme weather and physical endurance.

Beginning their ascent from base camp at 0200 hrs, the team faced inclement weather, a narrow summit window, and record snowfall. Despite the challenges, the contingent adopted a siege-style approach to navigate the southern route and reach the summit.

“This summit is a testament to the incredible synergy and resilience of our Team Kohima,” the cadets said. “Beyond the physical feat of reaching the top, we are proud of how we managed the risks and maintained our commitment to ‘Leave No Trace’ principles throughout the ascent. Standing on the summit of Mount Saramati was a humbling moment for all of us.”

The expedition also set a record as the largest uniformed contingent to scale the peak, with all 47 members successfully reaching the summit and returning to base camp without any major injuries or incidents.

The mission was supported by the NER NCC Directorate and NCC Group Headquarters, Kohima, whose logistical backing and technical guidance were crucial for the expedition.

Officials said the achievement reflects the discipline, resilience, and teamwork that the NCC stands for, while also highlighting the spirit of adventure and exploration among Nagaland’s youth.

The team is currently stationed at base camp near Thanamir in Kiphire for recovery and is expected to return shortly.
